We started off this morning by traveling to the Town of West Point, about half-way between Richmond and Williamsburg on the Middle Peninsula, where Senator Warner met with elected and community leaders from six counties and three towns in the region.
Delegate Harvey Morgan of Gloucester County was there to brief his regional neighbors on the devastating tornado that struck his community on Saturday night, killing two residents, destroying a school and damaging or demolishing almost 200 buildings and homes.
Senator Warner pledged to work with local and state officials to see what federal disaster assistance might be available for victims of the tragedy.
Next, we dropped by Pierce's Famous Pitt Barbeque in Williamsburg. Senator Warner considers himself an aficionado of Virginia’s finer barbecue establishments, and he always makes it a point to drop-by Pierce’s when he’s in the region. The Senator grabbed a BBQ chicken sandwich and a sweet tea.
Next, we traveled to Newport News to greet workers and meet with the management of the “new” Huntington Ingalls Shipyard. Earlier this month, the former Newport News Shipyard was spun-off by Northrop Grumman Corp. and is now is the stand-alone company Huntington Ingalls. It’s one of Virginia’s largest private employers, and it’s the nation’s only builder of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines.

He will update them on his work as a leader of the Senate’s so-called “Gang of Six,” which is very close to finishing work on a bipartisan plan to tackle America’s deficits and debt.
