CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield announced that hackers recently gained limited access to personal information about 1.1 million current and former customers. While the hackers may have gained access to personal information such as names, birthdates, email addresses, usernames, and subscriber identification numbers, they did not obtain customers’ more sensitive information such as medical details, Social Security and credit card numbers, and account passwords, which are stored in a separate database.

CareFirst BCBS serves customers in Northern Virginia and throughout the D.C. region, including many federal employees. Only subscribers who registered to use CareFirst’s website prior to June 20, 2014 are potentially affected by the breach.

If you are a current or former CareFirst member who believes that your information may have been accessed, CareFirst will notify you individually by mail in the next 1 to 3 weeks.

CareFirst has established a website, http://carefirstanswers.com/, where members can access information about the breach. Helpful information on protecting your identity and recognizing the warning signs of identity theft is available at the Federal Trade Commission website here.

CareFirst is offering two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection services to affected members, and those members will also be required to create new usernames and passwords. CareFirst is working with authorities to investigate the breach.
