Statement: DOT Approves Dulles Rail Extension
Jan 07 2009
The Department of Transportation today approved Virginia's plans to extend Metrorail to Dulles International Airport, providing federal funding for the project.
Senator Warner applauded Governor Tim Kaine's efforts in working with state and federal officials and said the announcement is "a testimony to the steady, bipartisan work of many members of Virginia's congressional delegation over several years."
Here is his complete statement:
"Federal approval of this vitally important Metrorail extension to Dulles will provide enormous benefits to our region's commuters and visitors.I first became involved in this important project while serving as a member of the Commonwealth Transportation Board more than 15 years ago, and we also worked to advance the progress of Dulles rail when I served as Governor.
Today's announcement is a testimony to the steady, bipartisan work of many members of Virginia's congressional delegation over several years, and I applaud Governor Tim Kaine's efforts to work cooperatively with the U.S. Transportation Department, METRO, and the Washington Metropolitan Airports Authority to resolve recent issues that threatened this project.
I am committed to work with my partners in Congress to make sure this project remains on track to provide tremendous benefits to the residents of the entire National Capital Region."
