WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) announced today that two Virginia airports will receive more than $1 million dollars to improve passenger screening and airport security.
The Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Newport News will receive $1,100,000 from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT)’s Federal Aviation Administration to improve the efficiency of passenger screening and provide access between concourses by constructing a walkway between the terminal concourses on the secure side of the checkpoint.
The second DOT grant was awarded to Louisa County’s Freeman Field, which will receive $80,000 to fund installation of a 19,500 foot perimeter fence to deter unauthorized people or vehicles from entering onto the airfield.
“These funds come at a time when the need for increased protection at our nation’s airports continues to be a top priority,” said Senator Warner. “I am pleased that these two Virginia airports will receive this investment to protect the thousands of Virginia travelers who use these airports, while also improving the existing airport infrastructure for years to come.”
