Federal pension "tsunami" is coming
Apr 23 2012
With a current backlog of 63,000 cases, and up to 100,000 new retirements expected through proposed reforms to the Postal Service business model, Senator Warner is working to fix the federal government’s broken retirement process.
Hundreds of federal retirees have contacted our office to complain about the inordinately long wait for full pension benefits while the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) processes paper records by hand. Delays routinely can stretch from a year to 18 months.
The Senate will consider a Warner amendment that requires OPM to move more quickly to embrace technology, as opposed to its continued reliance in paper records. The Warner amendment also requires OPM to provide timely reports on the size of the pension backlog, how long those retirement files have been pending, and how well each federal agency performs in terms of submitting the proper paperwork to OPM for processing.
