Predicting U.S. win over England in World Cup
Jun 09 2010
At a meeting on Capitol Hill today on global financial regulation, Senator Warner joked with Britain's U.S. Ambassador, Sir Nigel Sheinwald, about this weekend's much-anticipated U.S. v. England World Cup Soccer match.
Earlier this week, the American Ambassador in London wagered a meal that the U.S. would soundly defeat England, prompting Ambassador Sheinwald to joke that he was struck by the "supreme confidence" -- "even for such an exceptionally optimistic nation as the United States."
Senator Warner gave the British Ambassador a souvenir soccer ball from the U.S. World Cup Soccer team, saying "I don't want to cause an international faux pas or anything, but here's a little gift that you may want to keep after Saturday's match."
It will be the first time the U.S. has faced England in World Cup soccer since the Americans upset the British 1-0 during the 1950 tournament in Brazil.
