Celebrating India

Jan 26 2011

This morning Senator Warner hosted a “Commonwealth Coffee” event for members of Virginia’s Indian-American community. Today’s event was held to honor Republic Day, which marks India’s adoption of a democratic constitution 62 years ago.

About 60 business leaders attended the coffee, as well as Deputy Chief of the Indian Mission Ambassador Arun Singh, Assistant Secretary & Director General of the US & Foreign Commercial Service Suresh Kumar, and representatives from the US-India Business Council.

Senator Warner spoke shortly at the Coffee, welcoming attendees and honoring Republic Day, before introducing Ambassador Singh. The Ambassador said he was grateful to attend on such an important day for India, and that he looked forward to increased ties between India and the U.S.

Senator Warner recently was appointed co-chair, along with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), of the bipartisan Senate India Caucus, which works to bring attention to domestic and international issues that affect the economies and security of both nations.  The two Senators joined in an op/ed for India Abroad to celebrate Republic Day, which you can read below.

Senator Warner has long been involved with Virginia’s Indian-American community, and as Governor of Virginia, led more than 40 of Virginia’s leading corporate executives on a trade visit to India, meeting with India’s Prime Minister and other top government and business leaders.

Since taking office early in 2009, Senator Warner has hosted about 15 Commonwealth Coffee outreach events, which provides an opportunity for him to visit with and discuss a wide range of issues with his Virginia constituents.
