Senator Warner released the following statement today, after President Obama's speech announcing his strategy in Afghanistan.
He said he is reviewing the administration’s proposal, and he will study additional details included in today’s testimony from members of the President’s national security team.
“As I learned during a trip to Afghanistan and Pakistan early last summer, it is important that our strategy considers all of the complex issues in that region. I am very interested in hearing more about additional troop commitments from our NATO allies. I also am pleased that the President wants to re-focus on our relationship with Pakistan as a key part of the effort to root out al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups operating in the border regions. It also is important to acknowledge that we cannot succeed with troops alone, so building-up the Afghan civilian security structure has to be a vital part of our strategy.”
