WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) released the following statement regarding today’s Government Accountability Office (GAO) report entitled “Managing for Results:  Leading Practices Should Guide the Continued Development of Performance.gov.”:

“The goal of the central website for performance information is to more clearly communicate results from across the federal government to taxpayers and Congress. Today, GAO correctly pointed out that there is still work to do to make the performance.gov website more user-friendly. I would like to see more dashboards and summary data like that state governments provide to citizens, especially for the cross-agency priority goals. Websites like our own Virginia Performs provide a valuable service for both taxpayers and elected officials, and getting this right on the federal level is extremely important. I will continue working with the Administration to communicate the good work being done across the government on behalf of taxpayers, and to identify areas where improvement is needed to get better results.”

Sen. Warner serves as chair of the Senate Budget Committee’s bipartisan Performance Task Force.  In 2010, he sponsored the bipartisan Government Performance and Results Modernization Act, which required the development of the Performance.gov website. The Act also required federal agencies to identify their top priorities, annually report program results, and target ineffective or overlapping programs for potential consolidation or elimination.
