Over the weekend, we spotted a special message on Senator Warner’s Facebook wall.
Casey Scott, a Young Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant, had written:
Senator Warner’s father, Robert, is a former Marine who took part in the epic 1945 battle between the United States and Japan for control of the Pacific island of Iwo Jima. The fierce, 35-day battle resulted in the deaths of 6,821 Americans and more than 21,500 Japanese soldiers died.
It was great to hear that Mr. Warner had a chance to connect with some younger travelers during last week’s trip marking the 66th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima.
It also provides a nice opportunity to re-post a great photo of Senator Warner and his father, Robert, taken last year at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Northern Virginia. Interestingly, the Memorial is based on AP photographer Joe Rosenthal’s iconic photograph of U.S. Marines raising the U.S. flag on the top of Iwo Jima’s Mount Suribachi.
