On day two of Senator Warner's trip across the Commonwealth he was supposed to start by addressing Handley High School students in Winchester, and follow that up by attending a Kiwanis Club meeting in Harrisonburg and holding a roundtable with veterans in Staunton.
After 18 months of work on this issue, I have good news and bad when it comes to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The good news is that the government-backed mortgage companies now have paid back almost all of the $188 million bailout that taxpayers were required to provide when the housing industry cratered in 2008.
Senator Warner kicked off a 5-day trip across the Commonwealth today with stops in Woodbridge and Reston to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Senator spoke about one of his personal heroes, Barbara Rose Johns from Prince Edward County.

I am happy to report progress on many of my priorities, including more transparency and accountability in federal spending, new tools to allow smart infrastructure investments, and a reform of the federal government's role in housing finance to better protect taxpayers.
Over the course of 2013, we also worked to help thousands of Virginians successfully navigate the federal bureaucracy. We responded to almost 315,000 emails and letters from Virginians. I most enjoyed getting out of Washington to hear from people across Virginia at more than 125 public events, including almost 60 roundtable discussions and town hall meetings. As the year draws to a close, I want to thank you for the honor of representing you in Congress, and wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

Supporting Springfield as next FBI campus

Senator Warner joined Sen. Kaine, Gov.-elect McAuliffe, Reps. Connolly, Moran and Wolf, and a variety of state and local officials to announce his support for the FBI relocating its headquarters to a site near the Springfield Interchange in Fairfax County.
Transparency is critical to our democracy, especially for a federal government that spent about $3.5 trillion last year. Policymakers and taxpayers should be able to quickly answer some basic questions about federal spending, like how much did we spend, and who received our money?
Sen. Mark Warner and a bipartisan group of lawmakers in Washington introduced legislation last week to exempt volunteer first responders, including fire-and-rescue volunteers in Pittsylvania County, from the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance mandate.
