Working to resolve flag dispute
Dec 03 2009
Senator Warner reached out to try to help a Richmond-area veteran this week in his dispute over a flagpole at his home.
On Wednesday afternoon, Senator Warner saw this story on the Richmond Times-Dispatch website about Col. Van T. Barfoot, a 90-year-old Medal oHelf Honor recipient who was in a standoff with his community's homeowner's association over a flagpole located in his front yard. The association argued that the pole violated community guidelines.
Senator Warner called Col. Barfoot on Wednesday night to offer his support and assistance. The Senator met Barfoot several times in recent years, most notably at the 2005 groundbreaking for a state veteran's facility in Richmond that bears Barfoot's name.
Today, the homeowner's group asked our office to help work toward a solution with Col. Barfoot. Our office released this statement this afternoon:
“Today, the Sussex Square Homeowner’s Association Board voted unanimously to ask Senator Warner’s office to attempt to reach a reasonable solution in the dispute over a flagpole on property owned by Col. Van T. Barfoot. We intend to get to work right away to try to come up with a solution that’s acceptable to both Col. Barfoot and to the Homeowner’s Association.”
