Senator Warner met with a group of six Virginia Girl Up global advocates. Girl Up, a United Nations Foundation campaign, gives American girls the opportunity to empower young women in developing countries, while creating the next generation of world leaders. The teen advocates are appointed for a year term, the culmination of which is a three day summit in Washington, D.C., where they meet with their representatives on Capitol Hill.

Senator Warner praised the global leaders for raising awareness on issues like the lack of healthcare and access to education that the over 600 million girls living in developing countries face.

“It’s inspiring to see young Virginians advocating for those who are unable to advocate for themselves” Senator Warner said. “We need more leaders like you to help ensure that women and girls around the world can reach their full potential.”

Besides meeting with Senator Warner, the girls had the opportunity to hear from United States Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Powers, and Marie Claire editor-in-chief, Anne Fulenwider.
