Some mortgage relief for drywall victims
Apr 06 2010
Senator Warner received a letter from Fannie Mae CEO Michael Williams last week pledging to provide six-months of relief on mortgage payments for families dealing with contaminated drywall issues.
Senator Warner has been an outspoken advocate on behalf of these families, many of whom have been forced from their homes due to structural concerns and health issues, for close to a year. Members of our staff have been actively working with about 20 mortgage lenders since October 2009 to try to arrange some mortgage relief to the Virginia families who have homes with contaminated drywall.
In his letter, Mr. Williams says Fannie Mae will work to make sure that this mortgage relief does not negatively impact the homeowner’s credit report. He also indicated that the lender will form a task force “to develop a nationwide approach to addressing this [drywall] issue.”
Using Fannie Mae's response as an example for how all mortgage lenders should be working with customers who have contaminated drywall issues, Senator Warner today sent a letter to each of the 20 mortgage lenders to suggest that they adopt the same policies.
