Sen.Warner announced that the Department of Veterans Affairs has certified W&M's Lewis B. Puller, Jr. Veterans Benefits Clinic as a national "best practices" program for expedited submission of disability claims.
U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) today joined The Northern Virginia Technology Council (NVTC), the largest technology council in the nation, in launching a new program designed to connect veterans to employment opportunities in Virginia's technology community.
As a POW in a Japanese prison camp during World War II, James “Denny” Landrum helped to construct a forbidden American flag out of bed sheet, using colored pencils to fill in the stars and stripes, and a stolen fireman’s pipe for a flagpole.
“We want to respect our veterans, but when you’ve got people waiting, often times in excess of a year to get their claims processed, that’s not a good sign,” said U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va. “This is a national embarrassment.”

Virginia's senior senator is urging VA Secretary Eric Shinseki to replicate the W&M model at law schools across the country. It won't solve the crisis alone – there are hundreds of thousands of backlogged cases – but Warner said it could reduce the most complex cases.
Almost 70 years after learning of Army PFC Alonzo Haynes’ death in combat, his family received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart he earned during his service in World War II. Haynes’ brother contacted Senator Warner recently after learning that he was eligible for the medals.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has awarded nearly $5 million for operations at state veterans cemeteries in Amelia County and the city of Suffolk, U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner announced today. The V-A awarded $3.3 million to the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk and $1.6 million to the Virginia Veterans Cemetery in Amelia.
