WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-VA) was sworn-in to office for his second term on Tuesday on the first day of the 114th Congress. Sen. Warner, a former Virginia Governor, was first elected to the Senate in 2008; he was re-elected in 2014. He is ranked 49th in seniority in the 100-member legislative body.
A successful business leader and co-founder of the cellular giant Nextel, Sen. Warner will continue to serve on the Senate's Banking, Budget, Finance and Intelligence committees.
"I am ready to get back to work for Virginians to strengthen the economy and make sure we're creating opportunities for our young people," Sen. Warner said. "As a business leader, Governor, and during my first term in the Senate, I demonstrated a willingness to work with anybody to improve the lives of Virginians. We have more work to do, and I am eager to get to it."
During his first six-year term in the Senate, Warner successfully enacted bipartisan legislation which increases transparency and improves efficiency across the federal government by placing information on all federal spending on a single website, and to require federal agencies to develop performance measures which will help identify government's best and worst performing programs.
In addition, Warner successfully updated whistleblower protections for America's military men and women who report wrongdoing, including military sexual assaults. In addition, Sen. Warner successfully amended landmark V-A reform legislation to incorporate recommendations provided for free by a private-sector team of Virginia-based business and IT consultants.
A co-founder of the Senate's bipartisan Gang of Six, Sen. Warner has remained a leading voice in Washington for broad, bipartisan fiscal and budget reforms to begin addressing the country's long-term national debt.
