Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has appealed the the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s denial of disaster assistance for individuals in Louisa County affected by the historic 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck Aug. 23. Senator Warner helped coordinate a bipartisan letter sent to FEMA from Virginia’s full congressional delegation in support of the appeal.
We began the first day of a two-day trip to Hampton Roads and the Peninsula with a visit to Hampton University. Senator Warner spoke to about 150 students about science, technology and engineering education, jobs and the economy. HU students asked the Senator questions on topics like how to jumpstart innovation, how to preserve funding for historically black colleges and universities, and jobs in the energy sector.
Senator Warner and Northern Virginia Congressman Jim Moran celebrated the expansion of the Virginia-based energy efficiency company Opower. Opower – the brainchild of two college buddies -- works with energy companies and social networks to help customers increase energy productivity and reduce energy bills.
Members of the Hampton Roads congressional delegation are urging NASA to consider NASA-Wallops for Unmanned Aircraft Systems testing. In a bipartisan letter, Senators Warner and Webb and Congressmen Randy Forbes (R-VA-4) and Scott Rigell (R-VA-2) encouraged NASA to use the Eastern Shore’s NASA facility for a UAS test range.
Senator Warner and history buffs around the state advocated for the designation of Hampton’s Fort Monroe as a national park yesterday. Senator Warner testified before a congressional subcommittee about the Fort and the need to involve the National Park Service to preserve its incredibly rich history.

Senator Warner appeared on CNN’s OutFront with Erin Burnett last night to discuss his ideas for strengthening the U.S. economy and spurring more job growth. The Senator cited the jobs and investment that could be created through expanded investments in infrastructure – both physical (roads, rail, bridges) and virtual (broadband, wireless spectrum).
Senator Warner joined bipartisan majorities in the Senate and the U.S. House in passing free-trade bills with Colombia, Panama and South Korea. The President sent the proposed trade deals to Congress last week.
